Attending an inquest hearing

If you have been asked to give evidence at the hearing, you will be expected to attend.

To support you when attending court, you can bring with you a -

  • friend
  • family member
  • colleague

with you.

If you're worried about attending, please discuss your concerns with the coroners officer.

If the coroner decides you cannot be excused, you must attend court. This is particularly important if you have received a formal summons to attend. 

Direction to the court can be found below -

You should arrive at least 30 minutes before the inquest is due to start.

There is no dress code, however the coroner asks that you dress smart casual and do not wear clothing that -

  • would cause offence
  • be disrespectful
  • be classed as workwear such as high-visibility jackets

Before the inquest starts the court attendant will meet with you. Here, they will explain what will happen and resolve any questions or concerns.

Court etiquette

When attending court there are certain rules and protocol that you will be expected to follow -

  • you must stand when the coroner enters or leaves the courtroom 
  • when addressing the coroner, you should do so appropriately and refer to -
    • a male coroner as Sir
    • a female coroner as Ma’am or Madam
  • you must not take photos, use video recording or shout in court 
  • you must not refuse to answer questions if you’re called as a witness

If you are found to be in contempt in court, you can be removed from the courtroom.
