When a death is reported

Post-mortem examinations

The coroner may decide a post-mortem is needed to find out how the person died. The coroner will always consider any -

  • religious beliefs
  • cultural requirements
  • family wishes

when instructing a post-mortem. Consent of a next of kin is not required for a coroners post-mortem, however the coroner will consider any objections raised.

In almost all cases the post-mortem examination will take place at Hull Royal Infirmary.

Once the post-mortem has been completed and if no further examinations are needed the coroner will release the body for a funeral to take place.
