When a death is reported

Post-mortem results

If the post-mortem examination confirms that the deceased died of natural causes, the coroners involvement will cease and paperwork will be issued to the registrars which will allow the death to be registered. This paperwork is often referred to as a CN2 form.

Next of kin or the point of contact's details will also be sent to the registrars so that they can contact them to make an appointment to register the death.

If the cause of death could not be immediately identified and the pathologist needs to wait for test results before reporting back to the coroner, the coroner will commence an investigation. This may mean it is not immediately possible to register the death.

In some instances, if the cause of death cannot be determined or the post-mortem revealed the cause of death to be unnatural the coroner will open an inquest.

The coroners officer will discuss the results of a post-mortem with the next of kin and advise of what happens next.
